“Fashion should be a form of escapism and not a form of imprisonment.” Alexander McQueen
There was a time when a love for vinyl was a reference to a sizable record collection, but now this dramatic fabric has truly set itself in the fashion mainstream.
Spring is undeniably all about statement outerwear. Whether you’re ready or not, the trend is already here so you might as well give it a try.
Although at first I raised my eyebrows when I saw vinyl appearing on the high street, and I was a little conscious of taking the plunge, now vinyl has shot to the top of my wish-lists.
And this is why…
STATEMENT LOOK
Not for the faint-hearted, this is most certainly a statement piece. Vinyl is an easy way to add some edge to your ensemble, you simply need to pick and choose the right piece that fits your style. There are enough vinyl pieces on the market that you can go full-on shine (like this fabulous coat from Urbancode), or take baby steps with a pair of vinyl shoes, a hat, or a bag.
HAPPY MEDIUM
For as long as I can remember the leather jacket/coat has always been a cool-girl wardrobe staple, but the leather coat almost seems to be a little too much for some.
Long leather coats are heavy and bold, which makes a vinyl coat a happy medium. As a material, vinyl is much lighter than leather, and carries a natural shiny gleam you wouldn’t find otherwise.
VERSATILITY
Vinyl is pretty versatile and there are enough pieces to either dive into the trend or ease into it with just an accessory like a bag or a pair of vinyl sandals. A dress can be worn for a night out, and a tailored skirt could work for your office job.
Vinyl also looks great with different textures, like a fluffy or woolly knit to contrast with the shininess of the coat.
DUAL PERSONALITY
Vinyl looks incredibly chic and shiny and therefore you may say it’s both, elegant and dramatic. Just make sure to choose pieces that complement your style. Try to pair it with knit dresses, OTK boots, denim and faux furs.
ACCESSORIES
Since vinyl itself is a statement I would keep accessories to a bare minimum to not overwhelm the look. I find that vinyl looks great with just a pair of sunnies and a pair of earrings (I’m wearing Swarovski).
What do you think about vinyl? Have you tried the trend yet?

When I read the title, I thought it was about music, not fashion! Haha.
I don’t have any vinyl in my wardrobe, although you have made it look appealing.
