“Over the years I have learned that what is important in a dress is the woman who’s wearing it.” Yves Saint Laurent
For over a decade, minimalism dominated the catwalks but maximalism is well and truly back on trend. We have seen 70’s inspired silhouettes and prints regaining supreme over the past few years, however, the last couple of seasons have also seen a return of sparkle and shine all over the runways.
The resurgence of disco fashion and the high-octane of going out clothes covered in glitter, sequins and feather embellishment has been given the universal treatment, crafted as cocktail dresses, handbags, and even two-piece suits.
Brace yourselves! You’re about to start seeing sequins all over my timeline coming in many incarnations, adorning shoes, dresses, trousers, blazers and accessories.
If you thought your embellished garments were only fit for the holiday party season, think again! These can be worn for absolutely any occasion outside of New Year’s Eve from slinky gowns with embellished sleeves, to super-short mini dresses covered in crystals, sequined skirts, dresses and tops.
When it comes to planning there are two types of people, those who are properly prepared to take on the whirlwind of the holiday season, and those who wait until the very last minute. I most definitely belong to the first category and I tend to plan my outfits well in advance. I picked the dress for my NYE ball back in August and I can’t wait to finally wear it!
Given that Christmas is the season of giving, we often spend a ton of money on loved ones, so budgeting really comes into play. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing tips and suggestions for the holidays outfits plus gift guides.
Where to buy dresses under £100
For those who like to spend their holidays on the elegant side, go for a dress that fits the occasion. With a little bit of searching, it’s possible to find elegant, head turning dresses for less than £100 like these two beauties, Missguided Sequin Wrap Front Midi Dress (only £45!) and TFNC high neck sequin midi Dress (£85!).

Sequin dresses always infuse a bit more festivity into your look, and instead of opting for another LBD, try to inject some colour to your wardrobe and maybe some unique details such as an asymmetrical hemline, lace, puff sleeves, etc. Places like Warehouse, Asos, Next, Zara, Goddiva and Forever Unique can cover you in this department. Just remember to keep the rest of your accessories to a minimum; a pair of pretty pumps and a classic clutch is all you need to shine all night long.
DESIGNER EYE CANDY
Why not to resurrect an old dress look by adding blingy accessories like statement earrings or metallic heels that you can find in pretty much every store. Try Accessories, Grattan, Swarovski, Ted Baker (I love their rose gold heels!) or Unze.
How to clean sequins
So, sequins most definitely bring a festive spark to any outfit however there is one tiny problem, how you’re going to keep your new sequined purchases clean? Sequins do look amazing but unfortunately anything that looks fancy is very often the trickiest to clean.
Once piece of advice, when in doubt over a particularly prized piece of clothing, a professional cleaning job is never a bad investment. Clean your own clothes at your own risk!
If you’re just looking to remove armpit stink or dust-type dirtiness, fill a tub or sink full of lukewarm water and stir in mild laundry soap until it’s dissolved. Swirl your sequinned item gently in the water and let it soak for about five minutes. Remove from the tub and rinse in cold water until all the soap comes out. Hold the garment above a sink or tub to let it drip for a few minutes then lay it flat on a towel to dry. Do not wring it out and don’t hang the garment up until it’s completely dry, otherwise it can become misshapen from the extra water weight.
