“We don’t need fashion to survive, we just desire it so much.” Marc Jacobs
When comes to changing seasons and colour schemes we have been seeing a significant shift from bright and vibrant hues towards darker and moodier tones like grey, black and navy. To be honest, it is definitely working for me! You know I love my toned down hues so I am certainly here for it.
My favourite this season, brown! Brown gets a pretty bad reputation when it comes to clothing. We tolerate brown accessories but pretty much anything else in the colour has traditionally been shunned as unwelcome and unflattering. It’s ugly and the reserve of librarians and girl scouts.
But, despite such a bad reputation, this season the fashion world has declared it a must-have hue. From milky beige, shimmering sand to haute hazels and deep espresso, it’s appearing everywhere in variety of shades! The 70’s child, brown, is becoming a new black! This isn’t the first time the decade has made a comeback, think big shoulders, fringing, checked blazers and corduroy.
Brown can be quite tricky to get right without looking like you’ve just stepped through a time portal straight from the set of Starsky and Hutch.
Below I’ve listed a few tips how to style brown that you may find helpful. What you need to know is how to pick the right shades, know what garments work on, and having a knowledge of how to pair them with a variety of colours.
EXPERIMENT WITH DIFFERENT SHADES
All those delicious shades, from chocolate to cereal hues, mean that tonal outfits work well. For me matching different shades of the same colour is a great way to look fashionable without trying too hard. Try wearing a darker, chocolate-coloured suit with lighter shirt and gold accessories.
MIX AND MATCH TEXTURES
Try incorporating a subtle touch of a different fabric like suede, leather or even corduroy to create a chic and edgy look. Even something as simple as adding a pair of suede boots into the mix can work wonders.
CONSIDER YOUR SKIN TONE
One of the most common mistakes, looking like you are wearing a birthday suit…
Always check the shade of the item against your skin tone to see if it’s significantly lighter or darker than your skin. If it’s not, stick it back on the hanger, regardless how much you like it. A washed out, “semi-naked” look is just not flattering.
GOLD ACCENTS
Accessories are the best way to elevate any look, there is no denying. The easiest way to test drive any trend? With some well-chosen accessories. Gold accessories look amazing against darker hues like brown.
PLAY WITH HUES
Brown pairs well with a wide array of colours.
Brown with Orange or Yellow
This is one of the most elegant colour combos you can opt for and definitely my favourite! Orange and yellow complement the darker hues of chocolate brown perfectly acting as a harmonic counterbalance for it.
Brown with Beige
Since I’m obsessed with beige this combo does work wonders for me! Timeless combo that will transition your wardrobe from one season to another without the need of spending a penny.
Brown with Red
Definitely one of the most daring and bold versions for matching brown. I find this combo perfect for casual out of office look. I also like mixing my looks by adding different textures as corduroy.
Brown with Green
Most probably not the first combo that would come to mind but it does work incredibly well. It’s like recreating the nature’s perfect match, the brown earth with green grass.
