“Beer is made by men, wine by God.” Martin Luther
The quality, style and value of South Africa’s wines makes them excellent buys today.
If you are looking for a wine with a grand history and tradition, look no further than Groot Constantia. It’s one of South Africa’s foremost historical monuments, tourist attractions, and oldest wine-producing farm dating back to as early as 1685.
The name Constantia is irrevocably linked to the most famous wines to be made in South Africa.
Groot Constantia received world acclaim from Napoleon, Bismarck and King Louis Philippe of France who was the biggest single buyer of Groot Constantia wines. Originally only limited volumes were made and it was so expensive that the wine was exclusively bought and consumed by the aristocracy of the world.
You can read more about the farm and the brand HERE.
I have tasted bold pinotage, silky shiraz and fruity merlot, and the next stop is Gouverneurs Reserve, a rich and explosive Bordeaux blend from this historic estate in South Africa.
Groot Constantia Gouverneurs Reserve is the flagship wine of this historic estate. An oak aged blend of four classic Bordeaux varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
Grapes from selected vineyards are treated with special care, during fermentation they are pumped over 4 times a day. The wine is then matured for 14 months in French oak barrels.
Aroma: Groot Constantia’s flagship red shows beautiful complexity on the nose, with ripe, rich flavours of blackcurrant, blueberries and graphite, supported by hints of vanilla and cinnamon.
Palate: the wine shows beautiful intensity and the time in barrel adds a hint of vanilla to palate.
Ripe, rich flavours of black cherries, plums, blackcurrant and hints of chocolate follow through in an elegant and restrained style. Smooth, with structured tannins and a refined and lingering finish.
Pairs well with: heavy meats, such as rib of beef with truffle as well as roast lamb with garlic and rosemary.
