“Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving”. Albert Einstein
After spending almost a full year just keeping my head down and working hard, I realised that I was seriously overdue some relax, unwind and alone time! And so, rather than choosing all inclusive luxurious resorts packed with tourists, I decided to explore a quieter part of France, the Alps.
After weeks of research I decided to stay near the incredibly picturesque Vaujany village (1230m – 3350m) with excellent views of the Grand Galbert mountain at the head of the valley, perched on a beautifully scenic slope in the corner of the Alpe d’Huez resort.
If you choose to stay in the area, I highly recommend exploring Vaujany as much as possible: visit the Musée EDF Hydrelec, enjoy a spa treatment or two or opt for a game of bowling. A full range of mountain activities are available in both summer (such as via ferrata, hiking, mountain biking, tennis and archery) and winter (skiing, sledding, snowshoeing, etc.), with a direct link to the Oz-Vaujany and Alpe d’Huez Grand Domaine skiing and mountain biking areas.
The Vaujany area is perhaps the ultimate backdoor ski resort thanks to its cable car and incredible facilities.
Staying at a chalet has always been a dream of mine, and finding one as cute as chalet La Maitreya was definitely the icing on the cake!
Surrounded by mountains and amazing views of the valley all the way down to the Lac du Verney in Allemont, it is the perfect place to relax, unwind and explore.
I think what I liked about the chalet so much is the fact that though it certainly had that rustic, one-with-nature aesthetic, it also offered all the conveniences you really don’t want to be without!
We stayed in the triple room located on the top floor of the chalet, spacious and featuring a covered balcony with views of the mountains. Pure lush!
The hotel and the surrounding property are absolutely beautiful, imagine the sunny terrace, hot tub, private balconies which offer incredible views of the mountains up to the top of Pic Blanc (3330m), lush greenery, and flowers absolutely everywhere you look!
I am very much a city girl who enjoys all the conveniences one typically expects to find at hotels, so my husband kept joking I wasn’t cut out for the chalet… Well, I proved him wrong! Though I must admit that it wasn’t very hard at all, because La Maitreya is the perfect combination of earthy and sophisticated! Basically, a dream mountain oasis with all the perks of a hotel!
What I also loved about this property in particular, aside of course from the lush landscape, stunning mountain views and unbelievably beautiful sunsets, was the fact that it pretty much caters to every type of traveller – no matter whether you prefer to spend your days sunbathing and sipping cocktails or taking a more active approach (check out my latest post about the Alps and summer activities here).
What really makes this place one of those you want to go back to are the welcoming owners Whitney and James, the kindest, friendliest people I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting!
The sun-lit terrace was probably the place we ended up spending most of our time, enjoying the view, working on our tans, sipping cocktails and just taking it all in! Since most of the trips we’ve taken this year were activity heavy, we were definitely looking for a few days of relaxation.
Another thing not to omit are the super delicious home-made breakfasts and dinners prepared by Whitney and James. Served 6 days a week in the dining area or on the terrace overlooking the mountains.
Basically, if we could stay there and never leave, we probably would because every visit goes by a little too fast and we can’t wait to go back.

By far one of our favourite holidays, the Alps were just as dreamy as we imagined them to be! Although we didn’t have quite as much time in this magical place as we would have liked, we did manage to see and do most of the things on our list! Though we’ve been back in England for a few weeks now, we can’t help but plan our next visit to France next year! Honestly, I can’t wait to go back!
