“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in you sail. Explore. Dream. Discover”. Mark Twain
Today, I wanted to share a post from New York City. This trip was probably one of our favourite city trips of all time. We got to see a lot of amazing places, taste delicious wine, eat some good food, go crazy with the shopping and capture beautiful photos of it all along the way.
It was only my third trip to America so I was very excited with the prospect of exploring another great city with so much history and tradition.
We stayed at the Langham Place Hotel just because it looked so beautiful and contemporary from the outside not forgetting that it’s conveniently based on 5th Avenue in the heart of Manhattan. We had a lovely suite that had tons of natural light coming in and a beautiful view of the Empire State Building.
Since this was our first time in New York, we spent the majority of our trip exploring the city. New York is humongous so we knew we couldn’t see it all in just a few days! We did a bit (well … a lot) of research before going to NYC, so we had quite a few places we wanted to see and everything was scheduled with army precision (with my husband planning nearly every single minute).
Thanks to my husband’s exceptional planning skills we also had quite a bit of time to enjoy ourselves and indulge in all our favourite things (drinking coffee, eating out and of course shopping! Is there anything like shopping in NYC? I think not!).
For my outfit, I decided to go with a safe choice of a cold shoulder PrettyLittleThing gingham playsuit with ruffle sleeves. I finished off the look with a pair of Swarovski earrings, Calvin Klein bag and ASOS flat sandals to accommodate lots of walking. Adequately equipped we ventured into the day.
My favourite time in any city is early mornings. I love how empty and quiet it is and New York was no exception as we started off the first day at 7am. It was a truly unforgettable experience to walk 5th Avenue sipping coffee with pretty much no one around. Something about starting your morning with a delicious cup of coffee just sets the mood for the rest of the day.
We briefly stopped at the New York Public Library, the Chrysler building and then headed towards Grand Central Terminal (NOT station as many people refer to it). This truly astonishing terminal is a great place to see, it has an impressive 44 platforms, more than any other rail station in the world and is the pinnacle of American long-distance passenger rail travel. One of the terminal’s most striking features is the astronomical mural on the ceiling of the main concourse, which shows the Mediterranean sky during the October to March zodiac and features 2,500 stars. 50 painters worked on the mural, trying to ensure that there was no variation in colour tone.
Guys if you ever get to visit NYC this place is a must see.
We managed to pass all the designer shops without venturing inside, just a few photos (only because shops were still closed so early in the morning).
Next stop was Central Park, the most visited urban park in the United States. It was so much fun wandering little paths with squirrels jumping around us literally everywhere. It’s such a great place to unwind, enjoy life’s little moments, and take a breath before the craziness of NYC.
We had an amazing brunch at the Boathouse Lakeside Restaurant admiring the view of beautiful NYC. I loved just sitting and watching the boats pass by while I sipped my latte. I couldn’t possibly put it into words so I hope the photos do it at least a little bit of justice!
The rest of the day we spent shopping on 5th Avenue, which I suspect my husband didn’t enjoy as much as I did…
For my next outfit, I chose a top and a pair of white shorts from Abercrombie that I purchased just a couple of hours earlier on 5th Avenue. I guess I was just trying to justify the shopping to my husband and that none of the purchases will not end up unworn in my closet for months. I finished off the look with a pair of incredibly comfortable suede flats from Accessorize which I have in every possible colour and the Christian Lacroix bag.
We started off the second day with a delicious cup of coffee and an incredibly yummy fruit tart at the conveniently located (just next-door) Maison Kayser cafe. I like to find a cute cafe, get my coffee and pastries, and just people-watch.
For my outfit, I chose something comfortable and ready for lots more walking, a light pink wrap back ring top with a pair of Zara black shorts (that I’d purchased the day before). I finished off the look with a pair of tassel drop hoop diamante earrings from River Island, a pair of suede flats from Accessorize and the Calvin Klein bag. Funny enough I actually purchased this bag just a couple of months earlier in Macy’s in Miami, during our Honeymoon trip.
Though we were a bit tired after our first day’s walking, as soon as we stepped out of the cafe and saw 5th Avenue waking up, our fatigue disappeared in seconds, and we couldn’t wait to go exploring! We spent the rest of the day exploring Wall Street and admiring the astonishing Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges.
We has a fantastic lunch at Katz’s Deli. Katz’s was the site of Meg Ryan’s famous scene in the 1989 romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally. I highly recommend visiting this place as the food is out of this world!
I hope you enjoyed reading about our NYC trip.
