“Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak.” Rachel Zoe
The start of every new season is always an exciting time to dive into the biggest fashion trends.
If you can manage to see through all the animal prints roaring across the fashion stages, then you will have noticed that there’s another key trend creeping through this winter … and that is corduroy. Yes you heard right, your Grandma’s favourite material is back with a vengeance and quite frankly, it never looked cooler.
The word corduroy derives from the French ‘corde du roi’ meaning cloth of the king. In the 17th century French royal servants wore this fabric. From the late 18th century corduroys boomed during the industrial revolution, becoming the working-class fabric and stayed that way for a few hundred years.
Fast forward ‘a few years’ and this unappreciated vintage fabric has been given a new lease of life once more. Forget sumptuous seasonal fabrics like velvet because it’s time to make space in your wardrobe for another Seventies staple.
Some of my earliest memories of school are of shuffling down corridors in my fabulous louder than life corduroy trousers. When I finally grew out of them, I swore I would never wear corduroy again until now that is …
You can buy almost everything in corduroy, in every colour and style imaginable, from skirts to trousers, to suits and even shirts or hats.
Of course, the fabric will always have its traditional connotations but styled the right way – whether that’s through bold colours, sharp cuts or an oversized fit – it can be as contemporary as you like.
A big fan of suits in general, it is the rust corduroy version I just can’t seem to get enough of. Aside from the fact that I am always happy to see a bit of colour to lighten up the winter mood, rust/brown pairs beautifully with winter’s signature palette. Not to mention the fact that this soft shade is universally flattering and makes for a great alternative to the usual work-wear staples
Easy to wear, and easy to style! Since this is the year of all types of boots, pairing these with corduroy is one of my personal favourites at the moment, though I am equally attracted to the way it looks with dressier shoe styles like mules and pumps for nights.
Of course, these kinds of trends aren’t always as easy to translate into real life. So, just how do you wear it without looking like a librarian?
A CLASH OF TEXTURES
In recent times we’ve witnessed the rise of clashing patterns and prints and now it’s the turn of clashing materials to enjoy the limelight, and there is no better textural delight than corduroy. Think your favourite oversized knit jumper with a cord skirt.
HEAD TO TOE
It’s a statement and it can be scary but with a little thought, you can pull off something that will make you stand out from the crowd in the best way possible.
A cord jacket in a beautiful rust hue can look rather dapper partnered with matching trousers. It can look as smart as the next person in a traditional suit, but yours will be full of character.
PLAY WITH COLOURS
Although it’s nicknamed the ‘poor man’s velvet’, Corduroy is a fabric so rich that you can pull it off in some outlandish colours. Clash your colours, colour block with one shade head-to-toe, and wear with a little bit of attitude. One of my favourite colour combinations is red and pink!

Give your traditional suit a break, and switch to corduroy for a retro but cool feel. I love wearing corduroy pieces in rustic autumnal colours so that my outfit looks considered and chic. Take for instance, a navy suit with cognac brown accents. There are also so many pant silhouettes you can pair with a blazer like culottes or high-waisted flares.
Basically, sky is the limit when it comes to styling this trendy staple, and of course you know how much I love that!
