CELEBRATION OF UNUSUAL VARIETIES AND MASTERFUL BLENDS – IDIOM WINES

Idiom Wines, South Africa

“Wine makes daily living easier, less hurried, with fewer tensions and more tolerance.” Benjamin Franklin

Idiom wineries are nestled in the heart of the Helderberg mountains overlooking picturesque False Bay. This southernmost part of the Stellenbosch wine region provides the perfect backdrop and climatic conditions for the incredible range of wines.

EMBODIMENT OF THE BOTTEGA FAMILY HERITAGE

It is a complete family affair with everything down to the design of the labels being created by members of the family.

The Bottega family are proud of their Italian heritage and they celebrate it by planting and making a diversified portfolio of Italian grape varieties.

DA CAPO VINEYARDS

The Idiom vineyards are called “Da Capo” which means “from the beginning” or “from the Cape” in Italian.

This is reference to the fact that the vineyards were laid out and planted for the first time in 1999. The true inspiration for the farm’s name was drawn from an unforgettable Three Tenors concert back in July 1990. When Luciano Pavarotti asked the President of Italy which song he should perform as an encore, the reply was simply “Da Capo!”.

THE IDIOM COLLECTION

The Idiom Collection is an award winning range of premium wines.

The range consists of stylish 19 different noble varietals and provides a unique and direct comparison between the famous French wines of Bordeaux and Rhone and Italian wines of Tuscany and Piedmont. All uniquely expressed in the Cape terroir.

Idiom Bordeaux Blend 2014

60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot, 5% Malbec.

Fantastic full bodied and complex wine that you can drink it now or cellar for up to 15 years. It can benefit from decanting.

Evolving aromas of ripe blackberries and leather are followed by hints of cedarwood and tobacco.

Idiom Rhone Blend 2013

88% Shiraz, 9% Mourvèdre and 3% Viognier.

A medium to full bodied blend that you can drink now or keep in a cellar for up to 15 years. No need to decant it, but best to open it half an hour before service.

My favourite aromas of red cherries and vanilla with smooth velvety tannins and a long rich finish.

Idiom Cape Blend 2015

42% Pinotage, 28% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Shiraz/Syrah.

A velvety opulent wine ready to drink it now or can be kept in a cellar for up to 15 years. No need to decant it, but best to open it half an hour before service.

Rich and intriguing aromas and flavours with notes of hazelnut, dark chocolate and oatmeal. Soft tannins and a long finish.

Idiom Zinfandel 2016

Elegant and medium-bodied wine ready to drink now or can be kept in a cellar for up to 15 years. No need to decant it, but best to open it half an hour before service.

Refreshing aromas of raspberry and hibiscus with a finish of an explosive mulberry flavours.

Rare limited release Idiom 900 series

The Series is a rare expression of 900 bottles or less where each bottle is carefully selected to express the best of Idiom.

Idiom Heritage Series

The embodiment of the European heritage of the Bottega family. Exceptional quality but perfect for drinking every day.

TASTING NOTES

You can’t put all wines in the same bucket but if I was to summarise my affair with Idiom I would describe the wines as velvety opulent full bodied blends, very expressive on the nose with intriguing red fruit aromas and competing well soft smoke.

On the palate there are good firm tannins with lots of red and black fruit and with hints of vanilla, spice and dark roasted coffee. A succulent wine with a long finish.

WHERE TO BUY

Idiom is not an easy find in the UK. I purchased the wines you can see in images from 8Wines (recommended).
