“The best colour in the whole world is the one that looks good on you.” Coco Chanel
Colour block is a trend to stay, no matter the weather or season. It can scare the average person away, which is understandable since pairing can either make or break your outfit. Equally, colour is fun, creative and exciting.
Colour-blocking has been one of the leading trends offering ample inspiration for unexpected pairings for a few seasons now. You may remember all the 2020 eye catchy combos including bright on bright, or the combination of neons.
Saying this, not everyone is ready to add shocking colours to their classic black and nude winter palette and I definitely belong to this crowd.
If you have always loved to wear very neutral colours or blacks and whites, don’t rush to dress in all the possible rainbow hues. And yes, you can colour block with neutrals too. I find prints as a valuable asset when mixing neutrals.
If you’re new to colour blocking and need ways to ease into it without going too “out there” then let this be your guide.
USE THE COLOUR WHEEL FOR GUIDANCE
Ah, the colour wheel. If you’re not familiar with this concept, it’s time to do a bit of reading because it will make your life so much easier when it comes to pairing colours.
Select the colour scheme:
Complementary are colours that are across from each other on the colour wheel, such as red and green. This creates a high-contrast, high – drama look. A complementary colour scheme is great for small pops of colour to make items stand out. Pick a colour on the colour wheel then draw a straight line across the colour wheel, this is the colour’s complement.
Analogous colours are great for a minimalist. These are colours that are next to each other on the colour wheel, like blue-green, green, and yellow-green. When creating an analogous colour scheme, one colour will dominate, one will support and another will accent.
Triadic (split complementary) are colours on the colour wheel that form a triangle. One example of a triadic colour scheme is purple, orange, and green.
BALANCE IT OUT
The best way to tone down your bright pink purse or that electric red top is to balance them out with neutrals. I find that blacks, whites, greys and beige work so well with bright colours.
Once you know how to wear your bright colours with neutrals, you’ll never have to worry about going overboard with bold colours. The pop of colour ensures that you look striking, but not over-the-top.
EXPERIMENT WITH PATTERNS
You don’t always have to limit yourself to an outfit featuring only two colours. Combining colours with patterns and prints help to fuse several shocking colours together to create an arresting look.
BABY STEPS
If you’re not ready to go all out just yet try accessories as a way to wear bold colours. All you need is a splash of colour over your neutrals to stand out such as a pair of bright shoes in two colours, a colourful handbag or a two-tone bracelet.
ACCESSORIES
When it comes to colour blocking the right way, accessories can make or break your look.
Bright colour-blocked outfits should be complemented only with neutral and minimalist accessories. Think modest and elegant shoes and/or bag, plain necklaces or bracelets that will not attract additional attention.
For more toned down colours look for accessories that compliment the outfit. They can be in a colour you’re already wearing or one that coordinates it. A blue dress/jumpsuit with a black blazer works well with a green clutch and/or shoes.
If you’re already wearing three colours, stick to accessories in one of those shades. Keep away from embellished and detailed accessories.
MAKE UP
Unless your aim is to achiever OTT look, make sure to wear natural makeup with colour-blocked outfits.
