“Once a year, go somewhere you have never been before.” Dalai Lama
Mykonos, a jewel in the Aegean Sea, beckons with its timeless allure and captivating beauty. As you step onto this sun-kissed island, prepare to be enchanted by its myriad of wonders.
Here are some must-see attractions that will make your visit truly unforgettable.
How many days is enough
Mykonos offers a wealth of attractions, most of which is located within walking distance. In my opinion, one day is sufficient to explore most of the island’s historical landmarks, while another day can be dedicated to discovering the nearby islands of Delos and Rhenia. It’s also worth setting aside some time to immerse yourself in Mykonos’ vibrant nightlife. 3 days would be perfect but if you would like combine it with some leisure time then I would add another 2-3 days to your itinerary as we did.
Did you know? According to Greek mythology, Mykonos was the site of a great battle between Zeus and the Titans. The island is named after Mykons, a local hero and the grandson of Apollo.
Where to stay in Mykonos
Choosing where to stay in Mykonos depends on your preferences and what you want to experience. If you enjoy vibrant nightlife and being in the heart of the action, Mykonos Town (Chora) is ideal with its bustling bars, restaurants, and shops.
For a more relaxed beach vibe, consider staying in Ornos or Platis Gialos, which offer beautiful beaches and a more laid-back atmosphere. Ultimately, your choice should reflect the kind of vacation you envision, whether it’s partying, relaxing on the beach, or exploring the island’s cultural and historical sites.
We chose to stay on the quieter south coast of Mykonos at Myconian Villa Collection which offers unparalleled luxury with stunning views of Elia Beach, combining the elegance of spacious suites and villas with personalized 5-star service. It is only approximately 10 kilometers (about 6.2 miles) from Mykonos Airport (JMK) and 10 kilometers from Mykonos Town. The hotel belongs to a much larger family-owned ensemble of luxurious hotels which comes with a choice of hotels based in Mykonos Town or on the island’s beautiful beaches.
For a more in-depth review of our stay at this hotel, check out my recent article about the Myconian Villa Collection.
What to see in Mykonos
Mykonos Windmills
There are 16 windmills on Mykonos, with seven located on the landmark hill in Chora (Mykonos Town) and five in the area known as Kato Mili which have become the island’s most popular photo spot attracting visitors from around the world.
The famous few are situated right next to Little Venice and are symbols of the island’s heritage and a window into its past. Built by the Venetians in the 16th century, they were used to grind grain, which was a crucial part of the island’s economy. Here you can capture the perfect photograph as the sun sets, casting a golden glow over the landscape.
Some of the windmills have been converted into museums, such as the Boni’s Windmill, which provides insights into the island’s agricultural past and the traditional milling process.
Boni’s Windmill is a hidden gem with fewer visitors, located on a hill overlooking the bay, the windmill provides breathtaking panoramic views of Mykonos, especially at sunset. The climb up the hill is worth it for the scenic vistas alone.
Little Venice
This area was originally built between 13th and the mid-18th century by wealthy individuals, such as merchants or captains, inspired by the architecture of Venice. Walking through its narrow streets offers a glimpse into the island’s rich history and Venetian influence.
Little Venice is now home to a variety of bars, cafes, and restaurants, many of which are housed in historic buildings. It’s a lively spot where you can enjoy a meal or a drink while soaking in the breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea.
The famous windmills are located just on the other side of the bay within 2 minutes walk.
The Old Port
The Old Port is a historic area that once served as the main harbour of Mykonos. It retains its traditional charm with quaint alleys, old buildings, and the picturesque waterfront.
The port is bustling with activity, featuring numerous shops, bars, and restaurants. It’s a great place to experience the lively atmosphere of Mykonos, especially in the evenings when the area comes alive with lights and music.
Located in the heart of Mykonos Town, the Old Port is easily accessible and serves as a starting point for various tours and excursions, including boat trips to nearby islands like Delos.
Mykonos Old Town (Chora)
Chora has a photo opportunity at every corner. Here, whitewashed cube-like homes contrast beautifully with brightly-painted wooden doors to make simple yet stunning contrasts. Expect to see pastel bougainvillaea draped fences in front of tiny Greek churches, stylish shops, and restaurants and bars lining the labyrinth of powder-white, walled lanes.
You cannot miss the Matoyianni Street, the main shopping hub of Mykonos, featuring a mix of high-end boutiques, designer stores, and charming local shops. The street is lined with whitewashed buildings, cobblestone paths, and bursts of colorful bougainvillea. This quintessential Cycladic scenery makes it a perfect spot for leisurely strolls and is one of the most instragrammable spots in Mykonos Town.
DID YOU KNOW?
Labyrinthine Streets: The narrow, winding streets of Mykonos Old Town were intentionally designed to confuse pirates. This maze-like layout helped protect the town from pirate attacks in the past.
Color-Coded Doors: Traditionally, the doors and windows in Mykonos are painted in specific colors: blue for fishermen, green for farmers, and red for everyone else. This tradition adds to the town’s vibrant and picturesque charm.
Panagia Paraportiani Church
No visit to Mykonos is complete without seeing the Church of Panagia Paraportiani dating back to the 15th century.
This architectural marvel, with its whitewashed walls and unique design, is one of the most photographed landmarks on the island. Its name literally means “Our Lady of the Side Gate,” and is derived from its location in the side gate of the entrance to the Kastro area. Its serene beauty is a testament to the island’s spiritual heritage.
Delos Island
A short 30 minutes boat ride from Mykonos, the sacred island of Delos awaits, one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece. This UNESCO World Heritage site is steeped in history and mythology, believed to be the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis.
The island is home to a wealth of ancient ruins, including the Terrace of the Lions, the House of Dionysus, and the Temple of Hera. These well-preserved structures offer a fascinating glimpse into ancient Greek civilization and architecture.
There is a plethora of available guided tours to the island. I recommend browsing through Viator and GetYourGuide. If you are staying at Myconian Villa Collection (please see my article here) the hotel organises it’s own amazing trip to Delos. You just need to speak to the concierge and they will get everything organised for you.
Catamaran Trip
There is no trip to Greece without a catamaran tour. Sailing around Mykonos offers unparalleled views of the island’s coastline, crystal-clear waters, and hidden coves.
Many catamaran tours offer delicious meals and drinks on board, often featuring fresh Mediterranean cuisine. A sunset catamaran cruise is a magical experience. Watching the sun set over the Aegean Sea from the deck of a catamaran is truly unforgettable. Some tours include visits to nearby islands like Delos, known for its archaeological sites, or Rhenia, which offers a more tranquil setting. These excursions provide a blend of relaxation and cultural exploration.
We booked a semi-private, brand-new catamaran cruise through Viator. I highly recommend this trip (link HERE)! The cruise offered an abundance of refreshing drinks, delicious food, and numerous stops for swimming and enjoying the stunning Mykonos coastline.
Mykonos Nightlife
Mykonos, often dubbed the “Ibiza of Greece,” is renowned for its electrifying nightlife. Whether you’re a party animal or someone who enjoys a more laid-back evening, Mykonos has something for everyone. Here’s a guide to the best spots to experience the island’s vibrant nightlife.

For those who love to party from day to night, Paradise Beach is the place to be. Famous for its beach clubs like Paradise Club and Tropicana, this area hosts some of the biggest names in the DJ world. The parties here start in the afternoon and continue until the early hours of the morning, offering a non-stop celebration.
Cavo Paradiso: Cliffside Clubbing
Perched on a cliff overlooking the Aegean Sea, Cavo Paradiso is one of the most iconic clubs in Mykonos. Known for its open-air dance floor and breathtaking views, this club attracts top international DJs and a lively crowd. The unique setting and high-energy atmosphere make it a must-visit for any nightlife enthusiast.
Mykonos Town: Bars and Clubs Galore
Mykonos Town, or Chora, is the heart of the island’s nightlife. Wander through its narrow streets and you’ll find a plethora of bars and clubs to choose from. Some popular spots include:
Jackie O’ Town Bar
A vibrant gay bar known for its entertaining drag queen shows and stunning sunset views.

A blend of lounge bar and hip club, famous for its fibreoptic ceiling that mimics the night sky.
Skandinavian Bar
A long-standing favourite with an open-air dance floor and reasonably priced cocktails.
Beach Clubs: Sun, Sea, and Sound
Mykonos is also home to several beach clubs that offer a perfect mix of relaxation and partying Scorpios on Paranga Beach is known for its bohemian vibe and impressive DJ lineups, while Super Paradise Beach Club is famous for its all-day beach parties.
Our visit to Super Paradise Club was truly unforgettable. Despite the bustling crowd, everything was impeccably organized. Upon arrival, we were promptly escorted to our pre-booked table. Within less than half an hour, we were served our drinks and food, and the attentive staff ensured we were well taken care of throughout our stay. The live entertainment was phenomenal, and the sunset was one of the most breathtaking sights I’ve ever witnessed.
Tips for Enjoying Mykonos Nightlife
Dress to Impress: Mykonos nightlife is glamorous, so dress stylishly. Women often opt for dresses and heels, while men should consider collared shirts and dress shoes.
Plan Ahead: Many popular clubs require reservations, especially during peak season. Book your spot in advance to avoid disappointment.
Taxis: Make sure you allow plenty of time to get to your destination. In peak season traffic can be really bad and what should be a 20 minutes journey can easily be at least 1 hour! Always ask locals and don’t just rely on google maps.
Mykonos Wining and Dining
Mykonos’ wining and dining scene is a vibrant tapestry of flavours and experiences that cater to every palate. From traditional Greek tavernas serving up moussaka and dolmades to chic beach clubs where you can sip cocktails under the sun, the island offers a culinary adventure at every turn.
